Why does Health and Safety matter?

H&S is taken quite seriously at John Good, with comprehensive adherence and legal responsibilities that inform how we operate. The scope of our Health and Safety Manager’s role might surprise you.

Our Group Comms Manager, Till, recently sat down with Health and Safety Manager, Jonathan, to find out more.

TILL: Health and Safety is a topic I probably know too little about, so can you tell me broadly what the role entails?

JONATHAN: That’s so interesting, to have to think about that for a minute. I would say my role is quite varied, from ensuring compliance, engaging with regulators and enforcement agencies and organising training to assessing risks, keeping abreast of legislation and maintaining service agreements for our kit.

TILL: Well, we certainly have a lot of kit! We’ll delve into more detail in a moment, but surely you also do quite a bit of admin?

JONATHAN: Oh yes, of course… matrices are my friends! In order to offer colleagues proper support and advice regarding environment and H&S regulations, I need to be across the details.

TILL: Talk to me a bit about the advice and support aspect.

JONATHAN: I assist with both external and internal audits, plus facilitate First Aid, Fire Marshal, Fork Lift Truck and Manual Handling training and make sure standards are met.

TILL: Sounds like loads of responsibility!

JONATHAN: It is, but I enjoy the variety. At the end of the day, it’s about people and making sure colleagues return home in the same condition that they arrived. H&S also makes business sense, as failure to adhere to relevant regulations could have a huge impact by way of prohibition notices or huge fines in the event of serious accidents or incidents. And by extension, our customers can be confident their print supplier has a robust and sensible approach to codes and practices.
